Reptile morphs, genetics and all.
A morph is just a colour or pattern gene - it changes how a snake or gecko looks, not what it needs. Here are 37 ball python and leopard gecko morphs with what each one is, how the genetics actually work, and where it sits in the hobby. Care is the same as any healthy member of the species.
🧬 How morph genetics work (the short version)
- Recessive - needs two copies to show. Hidden carriers ("hets") look normal but pass it on (albino, clown, piebald).
- Co-dom / incomplete-dominant - one copy shows; two copies make a distinct "super" form (Pastel to Super Pastel).
- Dominant - one copy shows, and there is no different super form (Pinstripe, Spider).
- Line-bred / polygenic - many small genes selected over generations, not one on/off switch (Tangerine, Giant).
- Designer combo - two or more genes stacked into one animal (Bumblebee = Pastel + Spider).
