The Cinnamon is a rich, dark chocolate-brown ball python with reduced, warm-toned patterning that gives it a clean, almost solid look. It is a popular "base" gene in the hobby because it darkens and blends nicely with dozens of other morphs. Cinnamon is a colour and pattern morph of the ball python (Python regius).

What it is

Compared with a normal, wild-type ball python, the Cinnamon replaces the bright golden-tan tones with deeper reddish-brown to cinnamon-brown colouring. The blushing and reduced pattern make the animal look darker and more uniform, with the classic "alien head" markings softened and filled in. It is a single-gene visual morph, valued more for what it does in combinations than for standing out dramatically on its own.

The genetics

Cinnamon is an incomplete-dominant trait, which the hobby usually calls "co-dominant" or "co-dom." Technically it is incomplete-dominant: one copy produces the visible Cinnamon look, and two copies produce a distinct, darker "super" form (the Super Cinnamon), which is much darker and often nearly patternless. Cinnamon is also allelic with the Black Pastel gene, meaning the two genes occupy the same locus and can pair to make a super-type animal together. Because a single copy already shows visually, no "het" carriers are hidden the way they are with recessive morphs.

Appearance

The base colour is a deep cinnamon to chocolate brown, often with reddish undertones and heavy blushing along the back. Patterning is reduced and the light dorsal markings tend to be muted. Eyes are dark. The super form (two copies) is dramatically darker, sometimes close to a solid brownish-black with faint or absent pattern. Colour can deepen and settle as the animal matures.

How it is bred

Because Cinnamon is incomplete-dominant, only one copy of the gene is needed to produce a visual Cinnamon, so pairing one Cinnamon parent to a normal yields visible Cinnamon offspring. Pairing two Cinnamons together can produce the Super Cinnamon (two copies). Breeders also stack Cinnamon with other single-gene morphs to create designer combinations, and pair it with its allelic partner Black Pastel. This is a general explanation, not breeding instruction.

Cost and availability

Cinnamon is a common, well-established gene and single-gene Cinnamons are widely available and inexpensive. Super Cinnamons and multi-gene "designer" combinations that include Cinnamon cost more depending on which genes are stacked, but the base gene itself is one of the more affordable and easy to find in the hobby.

Health and ethics

Single-gene Cinnamon animals are generally healthy and carry no special problem beyond normal ball python care. However, the super form (Super Cinnamon) and some Cinnamon or Black Pastel super combinations have been linked in the hobby to structural and developmental defects, including spinal kinks, "duckbill" or shortened snouts, and bulging eyes, and in some cases reduced hatch viability. Because of this, ethical keepers watch super and super-combo pairings carefully and avoid producing animals with these deformities. As always, choose reputable breeders who are honest about their lines, and see a reptile (herp) veterinarian for any health concern.

Care

Care is identical to a standard ball python. This morph changes only appearance, not the animal's needs, so the same enclosure, heating, humidity, feeding and handling guidance applies. Is Cinnamon a dominant or recessive morph?

Neither exactly. It is incomplete-dominant, often called "co-dom" in the hobby. One copy shows visually, and two copies make the darker Super Cinnamon.

Does the Cinnamon gene cause a wobble or neurological problem?

No. Cinnamon is not linked to the neurological "wobble" seen in some other morphs. The main concern is structural defects that can appear in the super form and certain super combinations, not a balance or coordination disorder.
