What it is
Fire is a single-gene trait that brightens and reduces the muddy brown tones seen in a normal, wild-type ball python. Compared to a normal, a Fire tends to look cleaner and lighter, with more contrast between the dark blotches and the lighter background, and often a slightly reduced dark pigment overall. The change is a shift in colour and clarity rather than a completely new pattern.
The genetics
Fire is an incomplete-dominant trait. In the hobby this is usually called "co-dominant" or "co-dom", but technically it is incomplete-dominant, meaning one copy of the gene produces the visible Fire look and two copies produce a different, stronger super form. The super Fire (two copies) is a black-eyed leucistic: a mostly or fully white snake with dark, black eyes. This super form is viable and healthy, not lethal. Fire is also heavily used in combos and is one of several genes that can create black-eyed leucistics when paired with other brightening genes.
Appearance
A single-gene Fire shows a lighter, warmer base colour with reduced brown, crisper blotches, and often a lighter head and cleaner sides. Some show subtle "flame" markings along the flanks, which is where the name comes from. Eyes are normal-coloured in single Fires. The super form is strikingly different: a near-white or pure white snake, sometimes with faint pattern ghosting, and solid black eyes. Colour and clarity can appear more vivid as the animal settles in and matures, but the basic look is present from hatching.
How it is bred
Because Fire is incomplete-dominant, only one copy is needed to see the trait, so a single Fire parent can pass it to roughly half its offspring. Pairing two Fires can produce the super form (black-eyed leucistic) when a hatchling inherits a copy from each parent. Breeders also stack Fire with other genes to build designer combos and BEL variants. Unlike recessive morphs, no hidden "het" carriers are involved, so a Fire always looks like a Fire.
Cost and availability
Fire is one of the more common and affordable brightening morphs. Single-gene Fires are inexpensive and easy to find, while super forms (black-eyed leucistics) and multi-gene combos that include Fire command higher prices depending on what else is stacked in.
Health and ethics
Fire carries no known genetic welfare problem. It is a simple colour gene, and the super form (black-eyed leucistic) is viable and healthy, unlike some lethal super forms in other lines. There is no wobble, balance disorder, or neurological issue linked to Fire itself. As with any animal, choose reputable breeders who prioritise health and temperament, and see a reptile (herp) veterinarian for any health concern. Note that welfare risks appear only if Fire is combined with genes that do carry problems, so responsibility lies in how it is paired, not in Fire on its own.

Care is identical to a standard ball python. The morph changes only appearance, not the animal's needs, so the same enclosure, heat gradient, humidity, hides, water, and feeding apply.
