The Ghost Ball Python is a hypomelanistic morph, meaning it produces less black pigment than a normal snake, which gives it a soft, washed-out, almost pastel appearance. Browns become warm caramel or tan, blacks fade to charcoal or gray, and the whole animal looks lighter and cleaner than wild-type. It is a recessive color morph of the ball python (Python regius).
What it is
"Ghost" is the common hobby name for a hypo (hypomelanistic) ball python. Hypomelanism reduces, but does not remove, the dark melanin in the skin. Compared to a normal ball python, the Ghost looks faded and hazy: the deep blacks are replaced by muted grays and browns, and the tan and gold markings look softer and more blended. It is a single-gene color trait, not a pattern change, so the classic blotch-and-alien-head pattern is still there, just gentler in contrast.
The genetics
Ghost is a simple recessive trait. A snake only looks Ghost if it inherits two copies of the gene, one from each parent (it is homozygous). A snake with one copy is a "het Ghost" (heterozygous) carrier: it looks completely normal but can pass the trait on. Because it is recessive, there is no "super" form and no co-dominant or incomplete-dominant behavior to clarify here. Note that "Ghost" is a hypo line, and several distinct hypo lines exist in the hobby that are not always compatible with one another, so hobbyists sometimes track which specific hypo line an animal comes from. Ghost is also frequently combined with other morphs to make designer combos.
Appearance
The base color is a warm blend of tan, caramel, and soft brown, often with a slightly yellow or golden cast. The normal dark saddles and blotches are still present but appear as muted brown or gray rather than crisp black, giving the snake a hazy, smoky, "ghosted" look. Many Ghosts show a faint lavender or greenish tint in the lighter areas. Eyes are normal and dark. Some individuals appear to brighten or warm up in tone as they mature.
How it is bred
Because Ghost is recessive, a visual Ghost needs two copies of the gene. Breeders produce them by pairing animals that both carry it: two visual Ghosts, a visual Ghost with a het Ghost carrier, or two het carriers. Pairing a visual to a non-carrier makes no visual Ghosts, only het carriers. To create designer combos, breeders stack Ghost with other morphs over more than one generation. Cost and availability
Ghost is one of the more established and affordable recessive morphs. Single-gene Ghosts are widely available and sit at the lower to middle end of the price range, while Ghost combined with rarer or more sought-after morphs can cost considerably more. Overall it is considered common and beginner-friendly in terms of price and availability.
Health and ethics
The Ghost morph carries no known genetic health or welfare problem. It is a color trait only and is not linked to the neurological "wobble" seen in some morphs or to any lethal super form. A Ghost ball python should be as healthy as any normal ball python.
