The Caramel is a colour morph of the corn snake (Pantherophis guttatus), a hardy North American ratsnake kept widely in the reptile hobby. It is defined by a single recessive gene that shifts the snake's warm reds and oranges toward yellow, gold, and caramel-brown shades. It changes the animal's colour only, not its size, temperament, or care needs.

What it is

A wild-type (normal) corn snake shows bright orange-to-red saddle blotches, edged in black, over an orange or tan ground colour. The Caramel morph mutes and re-tints that palette: the red is largely replaced by yellow and butterscotch, and the saddles read as brown or caramel rather than fiery red. The overall look is a softer, warmer, more golden version of a normal corn snake.

The genetics

Caramel is inherited as a simple recessive trait. A snake must carry two copies of the Caramel gene (one from each parent) to actually look Caramel. A snake with one copy is a "het" (heterozygous) - it looks like a normal corn snake but can pass the gene to offspring. This is a true on/off gene, not a selectively bred line, so its inheritance is predictable using basic recessive ratios.

Appearance

Caramels show a ground colour ranging from pale yellow to rich butterscotch and light brown, with saddle blotches in caramel, chestnut, or muddy brown. The intense red of a normal corn snake is absent, which is the quickest way to recognise the morph. Depth of colour varies between individuals and bloodlines: some are bright and yellow, others more olive or brown. As with most corn snakes, hatchlings can look duller or greyer and typically brighten and settle into their adult colour over the first year or two.

How it is bred

Because Caramel is recessive, producing Caramel offspring means both parents must contribute the gene. Two Caramel parents produce all Caramel young. A Caramel bred to a het Caramel yields roughly half Caramel, half het. Two hets produce on average about one in four visibly Caramel, with the normal-looking siblings being a mix of hets and non-carriers that cannot be told apart by sight. Caramel is also frequently combined with other recessive and dominant genes to build multi-gene "combo" morphs, where each gene stacks according to its own inheritance.

Cost and availability

Caramel is an established, widely available morph rather than a rare novelty. Single-gene Caramels are generally inexpensive and easy to find from hobbyist and specialist breeders, while combos that include Caramel cost more depending on how many genes are stacked and how clean the colour is.

Health and ethics

The Caramel gene affects pigment only and carries no known welfare problem - there is no lethal super form and no structural defect associated with it. A Caramel corn snake is as robust as any normal corn snake. When acquiring one, choose a reputable breeder who keeps clear genetic records and healthy stock, and use a qualified reptile (herp) veterinarian for any health concerns.

Care

Care is identical to a standard corn snake; the morph changes appearance only. Corn snakes are popular beginner snakes with well-documented needs for enclosure, heating, and feeding - follow current corn snake husbandry from reputable breeders and a herp vet rather than adjusting anything for the colour.
