The Mystic is a single-gene ball python morph that gives a snake a softer, slightly purplish-grey wash with a cleaner, more faded pattern than a normal. It is best known as a member of the large Mojave/BEL (Blue-Eyed Leucistic) complex, where it is used as a building block for striking white and pastel combinations. Mystic is a colour and pattern morph of the ball python (Python regius).
What it is
On its own, a single-gene Mystic looks like a refined normal rather than a dramatic change. Compared to a wild-type ball python, the browns are muted toward grey and lavender, the dark saddles and blotches look cleaner and slightly blushed, and the overall pattern appears a touch reduced and brighter. It is a subtle morph in one copy, which is why most of its value comes from what it produces in combination.
The genetics
Mystic is inherited as an incomplete-dominant trait. The hobby usually calls this "co-dom," but technically it is incomplete-dominant: one copy of the gene produces a visible, intermediate look, and two copies produce a distinct "super" form. Because it belongs to the Mojave/BEL complex, Mystic can pair with other complex genes (such as Mojave, Lesser, Butter, Phantom, Mocha and others) to create Blue-Eyed Leucistic and near-white combinations. The super form, often called Super Mystic, is a viable, mostly patternless lavender-purple snake with dark eyes - it is not lethal and carries no special defect.
Appearance
A single-gene Mystic keeps a recognisable ball python pattern but with a greyish-purple, slightly frosted tone over the brown, cleaner alien-head markings, and reduced dark pigment along the sides. The eyes are dark and normal in a single-gene animal. Super Mystic is much more dramatic: a soft, largely patternless lavender to purple-grey body. Like most ball pythons, individuals can brighten or shift subtly as they mature, but Mystic does not undergo a major colour change with age.
How it is bred
Because Mystic is incomplete-dominant, only one parent needs to carry a single copy to pass it on, and a Mystic animal shows the trait visibly - there are no hidden "het" Mystics. Pairing a Mystic to a normal yields a mix of Mystic and normal offspring. Pairing two Mystics can produce the Super Mystic form. To make Blue-Eyed Leucistics or designer looks, breeders stack Mystic with other Mojave/BEL-complex genes so the complex genes combine in a single animal. Cost and availability
Mystic is a well-established, widely available morph and sits in the affordable range for single-gene animals. Super Mystics and multi-gene BEL-complex combinations that include Mystic cost more, reflecting the extra genes involved, but none of these are considered rare or exotic by today's standards.
Health and ethics
Mystic carries no known genetic welfare problem. It is not linked to the neurological "wobble" seen in Spider or Champagne animals, and its super form is viable and healthy, unlike some lethal super forms in other lines. As with any animal, buy from a reputable breeder who keeps clean records and healthy stock, and see a reptile (herp) veterinarian for any health concern.
