Overview

The birdsnest coral is another beginner-friendlier SPS - delicate, needle-thin branches that tangle into a rounded 'nest', usually in pink, green or cream, growing fast when the water is stable. Its fine branches are fragile but frag easily. (Seriatopora hystrix.)

Origin & Habitat

Indo-Pacific reefs, on slopes and lagoons in bright, moving water.

Appearance

A dense bush of very thin, pointed branches forming a rounded nest shape; pink, green or tan with tiny polyps that give it a fuzzy look when open.

Placement & Temperament

Fast-growing and can shade neighbours; give it space. Fragile branches snap easily when handled - which conveniently makes it easy to propagate.

Tank & Water Conditions

⚠️ SPS stability required - salinity 1.025-1.026, 24-26°C, steady alkalinity 8-9 dKH, calcium 420-450, magnesium 1300-1350. Consistency is everything.

Lighting & Flow

High light (about 150-250 PAR) and strong flow.

Feeding

Photosynthetic and fine-plankton feeder; clean, stable water is the priority.

Health & Growth

One of the easier SPS, but still crashes from parameter swings. Its thin branches are brittle; handle by the base.

Is birdsnest coral good for an SPS beginner?

Along with montipora, yes - it is one of the more forgiving SPS. It still needs a mature, stable tank with strong light and flow.

My birdsnest branch broke off - is that a problem?

Not really - the branches are brittle, but a broken piece glued to rock simply grows into a new colony. It is one of the easiest corals to frag.
