Overview

Montipora is the gateway small-polyp stony (SPS) coral - hardier and more forgiving than most SPS, growing as plates, encrusting sheets or branches in oranges, greens and purples. It is the coral most reefers use to graduate from LPS into the demanding SPS world. (Montipora species.)

Origin & Habitat

Indo-Pacific reefs, across the reef in bright, high-flow water.

Appearance

Fine-textured stony growth - flat plates (M. capricornis), encrusting sheets, or branching antlers (M. digitata) - in orange, green, red and purple with tiny polyps.

Placement & Temperament

Encrusting and plating forms can grow over and shade neighbours, so give them room. Watch for the 'montipora-eating nudibranch' pest - dip new frags.

Tank & Water Conditions

⚠️ Demands stability - salinity 1.025-1.026, 24-26°C, and steady alkalinity 8-9 dKH, calcium 420-450, magnesium 1300-1350. SPS crash from swinging parameters, so a mature, stable tank and consistent dosing are essential.

Lighting & Flow

High light (about 150-300 PAR) and strong, turbulent flow.

Feeding

Mostly photosynthetic; feeds on very fine plankton. Clean, stable, nutrient-controlled water matters more than feeding.

Health & Growth

The hardiest SPS, but still an SPS: sensitive to parameter swings and pests. Rapid tissue recession ('STN/RTN') signals instability - check alkalinity first.

Yes - montiporas are the most forgiving SPS and the usual stepping stone from LPS. You still need stable parameters, strong light and good flow.

What killed my SPS overnight?

Usually a parameter swing - especially alkalinity - or a pest. SPS demand rock-steady water; test and dose consistently, and dip new frags.
