Soft corals build no stony skeleton - they hold their shape with water pressure and flexible protein, which is why they sway and why they forgive mistakes. Most run on moderate light and moderate flow, and several will grow visibly in a tank whose alkalinity and calcium are merely stable rather than perfect. That makes them the realistic first step for a reef that has been running a few months. The trade-off is what happens later: leathers shed waxy films that need skimming, and mats like green star polyps or clove polyps creep across rock and glass with no intention of stopping - so give them an island of their own, or plan on cutting them back. Zoanthids belong here too, and they carry the palytoxin risk described on the hub.
