Plakat Betta

Overview

The Plakat is the short-finned betta - the variety closest to Thailand's original fighting fish, and the hardiest, most athletic way to keep Betta splendens. Where halfmoons drag showy fins that tear and rot, the Plakat carries a compact tail it can actually use, swimming harder and living cleaner for it. It is the practical keeper's betta: same colors, same personality, a fraction of the fin problems.

Natural History

"Plakat" comes from the Thai pla kat - biting fish. This is not a modern showpiece but the foundation form: Thai breeders selected short-finned bettas for centuries for fighting stamina, long before Western breeders stretched the fins into veiltails and halfmoons. Every longfin betta descends from Plakat-type stock; the modern show Plakat simply loops back to that body plan with today's color genetics layered on top.

Appearance

A stocky, muscular betta of 2-2.5 in (5-6 cm) with short, functional fins - the tail roughly a third the length of a halfmoon's. Three main show styles: traditional (rounded spade-like tail, closest to wild type), halfmoon plakat or HMPK (180-degree tail spread on short rays - the dominant show form), and giant (an oversized line reaching 3.5-4 in / 9-10 cm). Every color program exists in Plakat form: koi and marble patterns, metallic dragon scales, solids, and multicolors. Females look similar to males, which trips up new buyers - males show longer ventrals, a pointier anal fin, and heavier body mass.

Temperament & Tankmates

The standard betta rules apply, amplified. Plakats retain more of the fighting-line temperament and, crucially, the athleticism to act on it - a longfin may posture, a Plakat closes the distance. One male per tank, no exceptions, and skip male-female cohabitation outside supervised breeding. In 20 gallons (75 L) or more, calm bottom-dwellers like corydoras and kuhli loaches usually work; avoid gouramis, fin-nippers, and anything brightly finned. Plakats are also notorious jumpers - stronger and more escape-capable than longfins - so a tight lid is non-negotiable.

Tank Size & Setup

5 gallons (19 L) minimum for a single fish, 10 gallons (38 L) if you can - Plakats use swimming room far more than longfins do. Heater, gentle filtration, and a fitted lid with the water line dropped an inch. Because the fins are short and tough, you can use slightly more current and rougher decor than a halfmoon tolerates, but soft plants and a resting leaf near the surface are still appreciated.

Water Parameters

Tropical and stable: 76-82°F (24-28°C), pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard water, ammonia and nitrite at zero. Plakats forgive brief parameter wobbles better than heavy-finned varieties, but they age fast in cold, unheated bowls just like any betta.

Diet

A carnivore first: quality betta pellets as the staple, with frozen or live bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia a few times weekly. Feed sparingly - the muscular body hides overfeeding until it becomes bloat. Giant Plakats in particular run to obesity and need portion discipline.

Health & Lifespan

3-5 years. The Plakat's headline advantage is what it does not get: the fin rot, tail biting, and swim-stress that plague halfmoons and rosetails largely disappear with short fins. Variety-specific issues to know: dragon-scale Plakats can develop scale overgrowth across the eye (diamond eye), gradually blinding the fish; marble and koi lines carry an unstable color gene linked to a higher tumor rate; and giants tend to live shorter, harder lives than standard-size fish. Otherwise expect ordinary betta concerns - velvet, ich, and water-quality ailments - all prevented by heat, clean water, and restraint at feeding time.
