Overview
The Ranchu is Japan's 'king of goldfish' - a back without a dorsal fin curving in one smooth arc into a tucked tail, a developed head-wen, and a rolling, deliberate swim that connoisseurs prize like living sculpture. It is the most refined of the dorsal-less breeds, judged traditionally from above as pond-viewed art.
Natural History
Perfected in Japan over centuries from Chinese eggfish stock; Ranchu culture (breeding, judging, top-view appreciation) is a devoted hobby world of its own.
Appearance
Compact egg body 13-20 cm, NO dorsal fin, smooth arched back, wen over head and cheeks; reds, red-whites, calicos. The back curve and tail tuck define quality.
Tank Size & Setup
Shallow-ish, spacious, smooth-bottomed tanks or tubs suit the breed (traditional keeping is top-view tubs); gentle flow, no sharp decor, fancies-only company - and they're clumsy even by fancy standards.
Water Parameters
18-23ยฐC, clean and stable with gentle filtration; the finless back and wen both punish poor water fast.
Diet
Sinking gel/pellets, greens; careful portions - the compact gut is the breed's weak point, and buoyancy issues are its classic ailment.
Health & Lifespan
Average lifespan is 8-15 years. Well-bred Ranchus live 8-15 years; the missing dorsal and compressed body mean swim-bladder sensitivity, so diet and water discipline decide everything.

Ranchu Goldfish - frequently asked questions
Why no dorsal fin?
Centuries of selection for the smooth arched back - the defining trait of the eggfish family Ranchu crowns. It costs swimming agility, which their care must accommodate.
Why are good Ranchu expensive?
Breeding to the back-curve/tail standard wastes most spawns; the few that meet it carry the price of the culls. Pet-grade fish are affordable and lovely.
Top view or side view?
Tradition says top - Japanese keepers raise them in tubs and judge the silhouette from above. In glass tanks you enjoy both; the fish doesn't mind.
