Overview
The Ryukin is the fancy goldfish with shoulders - a tall dorsal hump rising steeply behind the head gives it a proud, deep-bodied silhouette unique among goldfish. Hardy by fancy standards and spectacular in red-and-white, it's a showpiece with a slightly bossy streak at dinner time.
Natural History
Developed in Japan from Chinese stock via the Ryukyu Islands (hence the name) in the 1770s-1800s; a foundation breed of Japanese goldfish keeping.
Appearance
Deep egg body 15-20 cm with the signature high shoulder hump and a long or ribbon-like double tail; red, red-white, calico, chocolate. Show-grade humps start right behind the head.
Tank Size & Setup
75-100+ liters per fish, smooth decor, moderate flow. Mix with equally-abled fancies (Fantails, other Ryukins) - they're pushier feeders than delicate breeds like Bubble-eyes.
Water Parameters
18-23ยฐC, robust filtration, weekly changes; standard hardy-fancy requirements.
Diet
Sinking pellets/gel, greens and peas; measured portions - Ryukins bully food from slower tankmates, so feed across the tank.
Health & Lifespan
Average lifespan is 8-12 years. Solid for a deep-bodied breed; the compressed organs mean the usual swim-bladder watch, and fast growth needs clean water. 8-12 years with care.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Dramatic humped profile
- Relatively hardy fancy
- Gorgeous in red-white
- Confident, active presence
Cons
- Can outcompete gentler fancies
- Swim-bladder tendencies of the shape
- Needs real tank volume
- Quality (hump) varies widely
Ryukin Goldfish - frequently asked questions
Is the hump natural or a defect?
Bred-for and healthy - it's skeletal-muscular structure selected over centuries, not a growth. Steeper humps mark higher show grade.
Who can live with a Ryukin?
Similar-speed fancies: Fantails, other Ryukins, Orandas. Keep delicate slow breeds (Bubble-eye, Celestial) in their own gentler company.
Ribbontail vs regular?
Some lines carry elegant elongated ribbon tails - purely aesthetic choice; care is identical.
