Overview
Showa is the dramatic member of koi's Big Three - fundamentally a BLACK fish wrapped in red and white, with sumi plunging below the lateral line, wrapping the body and marking the head. Where Sanke accents, Showa dominates: bold, shifting, and the connoisseur's study in living ink.
Natural History
Fixed in the Showa era (1930s) and refined post-war; modern 'Kindai' Showa lightened the balance toward white, giving today's range from ink-heavy to snow-bright.
Appearance
Interlocking black, red and white with black wrapping the body and (ideally) dividing the face; motoguro (black pectoral-fin bases) is a signature. To 60-90 cm.
Tank Size & Setup
Koi-standard ponds; Showa's shifting sumi rewards the patient pond-keeper who watches a fish 'finish' over five years.
Water Parameters
As all koi; mineral content again influences sumi depth.
Diet
Seasonal koi diet with colour support; growth years determine how the tri-colour map settles.
Health & Lifespan
Average lifespan is 25-40 years. Standard koi robustness and lifespan; buy from lines with stable sumi if show dreams beckon.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- The boldest Gosanke drama
- Sumi development is a decade-long show
- Striking against light pond floors
- Deep collector culture
Cons
- Finished quality unpredictable young
- Standard koi costs and commitments
- Ink-heavy fish hide in dark ponds
- Judging is an education
Showa Koi - frequently asked questions
How do I tell young Showa quality?
You partly can't - sumi emerges and settles for years, which is why buying Showa is famously buying potential. Trusted breeders and bloodlines hedge the bet.
What is motoguro?
The prized solid black patches at the pectoral fin bases - one of Showa's identifying beauties against Sanke's plainer fins.
Black looks brown - problem?
Immature or soft-water sumi often browns before finishing lacquer-black; time, minerals and genetics decide.
