Overview

The Pearlscale is the golf ball of the goldfish world - a nearly spherical body armoured in raised, calcium-domed scales like sewn-on pearls. Endearing and absurd in equal measure, it waddles through calm water on fins that seem borrowed from a smaller fish, and asks for the gentlest of the standard fancy setups.

Natural History

Developed in China in the early 20th century; the crowned form (Hamanishiki, with a bubble-dome hat) followed from Japan in the 1970s.

Appearance

Ping-pong-round body 10-15 cm covered in domed pearl scales; oranges, calicos, red-whites. Lost scales regrow flat - handle with extra care.

Tank Size & Setup

75+ liters, warm-end-of-goldfish (20-23ยฐC - they're cold-sensitive for goldfish), minimal current, smooth decor, and only equally gentle round tankmates.

Water Parameters

20-23ยฐC stable, immaculate; the round body is even less tolerant of chills and poor water than other fancies.

Diet

Small sinking portions of gel/pellets plus regular peas and greens - THE swim-bladder-sensitive breed; overfeeding a Pearlscale is how buoyancy problems are made.

Health & Lifespan

Average lifespan is 8-12 years. 8-12 years carefully kept; buoyancy issues and chill sensitivity are the breed's known weak points, both largely diet-and-temperature managed.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Utterly charming golf-ball look
  • Pearl scales unique among fish
  • Sweet slow-water personality
  • Compact size for a fancy

Cons

  • The most buoyancy-prone breed
  • Cold-sensitive for a goldfish
  • Scales scar flat if knocked
  • Needs calm, competition-free tanks

Pearlscale Goldfish - frequently asked questions

Do the pearl scales grow back?

If lost they regrow as ordinary flat scales - the pearls don't return, so gentle handling and smooth decor protect the look for life.

Why is mine floating after meals?

The spherical gut: feed smaller sinking meals, add peas weekly, and skip a day now and then - Pearlscale buoyancy is a diet dial.

What is a Hamanishiki?

A crowned Pearlscale - the same golf-ball body plus a bubble-dome wen on the head. Same care, extra hat.
