Overview
The Oranda is the fancy goldfish with the raspberry hat - a fleshy crown (the 'wen') that grows over the head and gives mature fish their famous dignified, slightly comical look. One of the most beloved and keepable fancies, combining showpiece looks with reasonable hardiness and real personality.
Natural History
An old Chinese breed (mistakenly named for supposed Dutch origins - 'Oranda' = Holland) refined for centuries; the red-capped white form (Tancho) is iconic.
Appearance
Egg-bodied, 15-25 cm, with flowing double tail and the wen developing from 1-2 years old; red, red-white, calico, blue, black, chocolate and the prized red-cap.
Tank Size & Setup
100+ liters first fish; smooth decor, gentle flow, pristine water - the wen's crevices invite infection in dirty tanks. Companions: other gentle fancies.
Water Parameters
18-23ยฐC, excellent filtration with diffused output, weekly changes non-negotiable for wen health.
Diet
Quality sinking pellets/gel food plus greens; protein supports wen growth in youth, restraint prevents bulk later.
Health & Lifespan
Average lifespan is 10-15 years. 10-15 years when kept clean; the wen can eventually overgrow eyes in extreme lines (choose moderate breeding), and wen nicks need clean water to heal. Otherwise a robust fancy.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Iconic wen 'crown'
- Big, friendly, genuinely interactive
- Long-lived for a fancy
- Huge colour variety
Cons
- Wen needs clean-water discipline
- Extreme lines can lose eyesight to overgrowth
- Slow - fancies-only company
- Real tank volume required
Oranda Goldfish - frequently asked questions
Does the wen hurt the fish?
No - it's benign fleshy growth. Extreme show lines can restrict vision though; pet keepers should favour moderate wens for the fish's day-to-day life.
When does the hat grow?
Starting around a year, developing for several; a plain juvenile can become a magnificent adult - patience is part of the breed.
What's a red-cap Oranda?
Snow-white body, red wen only - the 'Tancho' look echoing the Japanese crane. The most famous single image in fancy goldfish.
