Cat Food for Sensitive Stomachs

When a cat's diarrhea is a food problem and when it is not, according to the Cornell Feline Health Center, how to change food without causing an upset, and three digestive cat foods - two over the counter, one prescription - compared on what their makers publish.

Not veterinary advice

This is a reading guide to published feline health advice and to what makers state on their own pages. Cornell advises seeing a vet as soon as possible if diarrhea lasts longer than a day or two and the cat also eats poorly, seems lethargic or vomits. Do not give over-the-counter medicines: Cornell warns that some can be harmful to cats.

The short answer: a short bout of loose stools is often about food or stress and settles on its own, but diarrhea that goes on is a vet’s question before it is a food question. The Cornell Feline Health Center says most cases are short-lived, either resolving by themselves or with a change of diet. It also says that diarrhea can be a sign of a deeply rooted, possibly life-threatening condition.

Food Causes and Other Causes

From Cornell:

  • An abrupt change of diet can cause a few days of diarrhea.
  • Stress, such as a long car trip or a weekend at a vet clinic, can cause a brief bout.
  • Kittens may be at higher risk as their digestive systems adjust to solid food.
  • Other causes, not food at all: disease of the kidney or liver, viral infections, feline distemper (panleukopenia), immune problems and lymphoma.

Changing Food Without Upsetting the Stomach

Because an abrupt change can itself cause diarrhea, switch gradually. Hill’s, for example, asks for a transition over at least 7 days for its digestive diet. Mix more of the new food into the old each day.

How we put this together. Three digestive foods from two makers, compared on what each maker states on its own product page, checked on 26 October 2026. Hill’s gives nutrients on a dry-matter basis, without water, while Royal Canin gives them for the food as sold, so the figures do not line up directly. The i/d diet is a prescription food, so it has no shop link: Hill’s asks owners to have a vet monitor the cat. We have not fed these foods, and a label cannot tell you how a particular cat will do. There are no prices here: the Amazon links search for the exact food, and we may earn a commission if you buy through them.

When It Is Not the Food

If a cat keeps having diarrhea, a new bag is not the answer. Merck’s advice for cats in general is to avoid table scraps, milk and raw meat, all of which can upset a cat’s stomach or carry risks (Merck). If the diet is already simple and the diarrhea continues, the vet will look for one of the causes Cornell lists.
