The Mini Lop is a chunky, muscular little lop - bigger and stockier than a Holland Lop - with a famously laid-back, affectionate temperament that makes it a family favourite. Its solid build and easygoing nature give it a teddy-bear appeal that lives up to the look.
A rabbit is a decade commitment, not a starter pet: rabbits are intelligent, social prey animals that live 8-12 years, need far more space than a hutch (plus daily free-run time), usually do best bonded with another rabbit, and dislike being picked up. They are not low-effort or ideal for very young children. Consider adopting - rescues are full of rabbits.
History & Origin
Developed in Germany (as the Klein Widder) and refined in the USA, recognised in 1980; distinct from the smaller Holland Lop despite the similar name.
Appearance
2-2.9 kg, compact and heavily muscled with a broad head, thick body and lopped ears; a wide range of colours and a plush short coat. Typical size: Small, 2-2.9 kg. Coat: Short, dense. Average lifespan 7-12 years.
Temperament & Handling
One of the more relaxed, affectionate lop breeds - many are calm and enjoy gentle company. Still individual, but the Mini Lop's easygoing reputation is generally earned.
Housing
Real space plus daily exercise, hides, unlimited hay; its bulk needs room. Bond a pair for best welfare.
Diet
Hay-based (80%+), daily greens, measured pellets, fresh water; watch weight, as the stocky build predisposes to obesity if overfed.
Health & Lifespan
Ear checks (lop ears), dental and GI vigilance, weight management, and neutering. 7-12 years.
Grooming
Short coat, occasional brushing (more in moult); nail trims; ear checks; never bathe.
