Both parents were shaped by people: the AKC says the Pomeranian was bred down from larger Arctic spitz dogs and that Queen Victoria is credited with reducing it from about 30 pounds to toy size, while the Chihuahua descends from the Techichi, which the Aztecs refined into a smaller, lighter dog.

2-5 kg with a fluffy ruffed coat (it sheds - Pom double coat) in fox-reds, creams, sables, blacks and blue merles; fox face, plume tail, permanent red-carpet posture. Typical size: Toy, 2-5 kg. Coat: Fluffy double coat: sheds.
Both parents are tiny. The Royal Kennel Club (UK) standard gives the Pomeranian an ideal weight of 1.8-2 kg for dogs and 2-2.5 kg for bitches and the Chihuahua a weight of up to 2.7 kg. The Pomeranian has a double coat, a soft, fluffy undercoat under a long, harsh outer coat, and the Chihuahua may be smooth or long-coated, so the Pomchi's coat varies.

Pomchi lifespan has not been measured; the overview gives the AKC figures for the parent breeds.
The parents share their recommended test lists exactly: on the AKC pages, both the Pomeranian and the Chihuahua clubs recommend patella, cardiac and eye evaluations. The AKC adds collapsing trachea, hypothyroidism, congestive heart failure, seizures and alopecia X for the Pomeranian, and patent ductus arteriosus, mitral valve disease and idiopathic epilepsy for the Chihuahua; it also suggests asking the breeder for the parents' OFA results. PetMD's Pomchi page lists periodontal disease, patellar luxation, tracheal collapse and patent ductus arteriosus.
Breathing is less of a worry on the evidence so far: in a 2026 study of 14 short-faced breeds, no Pomeranian had clinically significant BOAS, and Chihuahuas had a significantly greater share of dogs free of signs than Pugs, French Bulldogs or Bulldogs.
