Frenchton

Overview

The Frenchton crosses the French Bulldog's clownish charm with the Boston Terrier's tuxedoed athleticism - aiming for the bat-eared charisma with a bit more muzzle, a bit more breathing room and a bit more spring. Done responsibly it's a sturdy, comic, people-adoring companion; the flat-face health caveats still deserve eyes-open buying.

A designer cross: the Frenchton is a French Bulldog × Boston Terrier mix, not a standardised breed - individuals vary more than purebreds, in coat, size and temperament alike. No study has measured how long this cross lives; for the parent breeds the AKC lists 10-12 years (French Bulldog) and 11-13 years (Boston Terrier).

History & Origins

A 1990s American cross partly motivated by health - widening the Frenchie's gene pool and airway with Boston structure.

The two parents have related roots. The AKC traces the French Bulldog to toy Bulldogs that English lace makers took to France in the 1800s, and the Boston Terrier to Hooper's Judge, a Bulldog and English Terrier cross brought to Boston by 1870 who became the ancestor of almost all Bostons. A 2026 breathing study notes the close genetic relationship of the Boston Terrier and the bulldog breeds.

Appearance

7-12 kg, brindle, black, fawn or pied, often tuxedo-marked, with bat-or-rose ears and a short muzzle that varies pup to pup - longer is healthier; check nostrils. Typical size: Small, 7-12 kg. Coat: Short smooth: sheds lightly.

The Royal Kennel Club (UK) standard gives French Bulldogs an ideal weight of 12.5 kg for dogs and 11 kg for bitches, and Boston Terriers a weight of not more than 11.5 kg, divided into three weight classes. The AKC gives heights of 11-13 inches for the French Bulldog and 10-12 inches for the Boston. Both have short, fine, smooth coats.

Temperament & Character

Sociable, playful, comfort-loving comedians who consider laps a birthright; typically great with kids, dogs and guests. Snorty commentary comes standard.

Care

Moderate gentle exercise with STRICT heat caution (flat-faced rules apply: shade, water, no midday summer walks); minimal coat care; facial fold cleaning if present; most can't swim - pool safety!

Health & Lifespan

How long Frenchtons live has not been studied; the overview gives the parent breeds' AKC figures.

Both parents are short-faced. The AKC says French Bulldogs cannot swim and should never be left unattended near water, are prone to breathing problems, do poorly in hot or humid weather and are more sensitive to anaesthesia; the club's recommended tests are patella, hip, cardiac and eye evaluations. The French Bulldog is one of the three breeds for which the University of Cambridge and the Kennel Club launched a Respiratory Function Grading Scheme in 2019, grading dogs from 0 to 3 for BOAS. Cornell University also lists French Bulldogs among breeds predisposed to chondrodystrophy, a body shape linked with disc disease.

For Boston Terriers, a 2026 study of 14 more short-faced breeds found a moderate BOAS risk, with 25-50% of dogs free of signs, and linked narrow nostrils and a flatter face with risk in the breed; the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals now accepts Bostons into the grading scheme. The AKC adds eye problems, deafness and patellar luxation for the Boston, with a BAER hearing test on the list. A vet can assess a dog's breathing; we do not advise on it.

Measured meals - stocky frames podge fast, and extra weight worsens breathing.

Training & Socialisation

Willing, food-driven, occasionally bulldog-stubborn; short cheerful sessions win. Crate-calm training helps their separation-anxiety tendencies.
