Sheepadoodle

Overview

The Sheepadoodle crosses the Old English Sheepdog with the Poodle: a big, clownish dog with a curly black-and-white coat that often fades to grey. Goofy, gentle and devoted, it's a big soft family comedian with a big soft grooming bill.

A designer cross: the Sheepadoodle is an Old English Sheepdog × Poodle mix, not a standardised breed - individuals vary more than purebreds, in coat, size and temperament alike. No study has measured how long this cross lives; for the parent breeds the AKC lists 10-12 years (Old English Sheepdog) and 10-18 years (Poodle).

History & Origins

US cross popularised in the 2010s; the OES contributes the iconic pattern and the bumbling-comic temperament.

A story that the US Army crossed Old English Sheepdogs with Poodles in the 1960s is repeated on many breeder and pet sites; we found no military record or other primary source for it and have left it out. The Old English Sheepdog parent, in the AKC's account, dates from the late 1700s, probably in Devon, Somerset and Cornwall, and worked mainly as a drover moving cattle to market.

Appearance

20-35 kg standards (minis exist), plush-coated in black-and-white patches that commonly silver with age; teddy-faced and round everywhere. Typical size: Large, 20-35 kg. Coat: Plush wavy-curly, black/white panda, low-shed (varies).

The Royal Kennel Club (UK) standard asks for Old English Sheepdog dogs of 61 cm and upwards and bitches of 56 cm and upwards, with a harsh, shaggy coat "free from curl" over a waterproof undercoat, in any shade of grey, grizzle or blue with white; the AKC gives 60-100 pounds. The Standard Poodle stands over 38 cm with a dense, curly coat, so a Sheepadoodle's coat can be shaggy, wavy or curly.

Temperament & Character

Playful, affectionate, kid-tolerant clowns with a calm adult gear; some inherit gentle OES herding bumps (leaning on and shepherding family members - mostly endearing).

Care

Moderate exercise, but the coat is top-tier work even by doodle standards: dense plush that mats aggressively - thorough brushing several times a week, professional grooming on schedule, no exceptions.

Health & Lifespan

Lifespan figures exist only for the parent breeds, and the overview lists them.

On the AKC page, Old English Sheepdog breeders screen for hip dysplasia, eye conditions (PRA and hereditary cataracts), autoimmune thyroiditis, cardiac anomalies and hereditary deafness, and DNA tests exist for cerebellar ataxia, primary ciliary dyskinesia, drug sensitivity and exercise-induced collapse. The drug sensitivity is the MDR1 mutation: Washington State University's laboratory gives an approximate frequency of 5% in Old English Sheepdogs and 10% in herding breed crosses, and warns that affected dogs can react severely to some common medications.

The Standard Poodle adds its own list: hip and eye evaluations, thyroid, NEwS and von Willebrand disease tests, and a higher risk of bloat than the smaller Poodles. In UK primary-care data from 2016, Standard Poodles had 51.38 times the odds of Addison's disease (hypoadrenocorticism) of crossbred dogs.
