Overview

The Singapura is the smallest pedigreed cat breed in the world - a tiny, ticked, sepia-toned cat with huge eyes and ears originating from the street cats of Singapore. Despite the diminutive size, the breed has a big personality - curious, active, and demanding of attention.

History & Origins

American cat breeders Tommy and Hal Meadow imported what they described as Singapore street cats ("drain cats") in 1975 and developed the breed. The origin story has been disputed; some genetic studies suggest the breed may have been developed with Burmese × Abyssinian crosses rather than from Singaporean street cats. CFA recognition came in 1988.

Appearance

Small, fine-boned, ticked. Adults weigh 2-3.5 kg (4-8 lb) - the smallest pedigreed breed.

• Coat: very short, fine, close-lying, ticked.
• Colour: sepia agouti (dark brown ticking on a warm ivory base) - the only recognised colour.
• Eyes: large, almond, hazel/gold/green.
• Ears: large, slightly cupped.
• Body: small, muscular, surprisingly heavy for the size.

Temperament & Character

Active, curious, intensely people-oriented. Despite the size, the Singapura is a "Velcro cat" - follows owners everywhere, demands participation, climbs on shoulders.

Health & Lifespan

11-15 years.

• Uterine inertia - small females may need C-sections.
