How much exercise does my dog need?

There is no single number - a Basset and a Border Collie live on different planets. Pick your dog's energy level and age for a rough daily target, plus how to split it and why sniffing and training count just as much as distance.

These are healthy-dog starting points. Breed, weight, health and weather all move the number. Build fitness up gradually.
Aim for about - min/day of real exercise, most days

Do not forget the brain: Mental enrichment - sniffing walks, training games and puzzle feeders - tires a dog as much as running, and counts toward a good day.

⚠️ These are healthy-adult starting points, not a prescription. Growing puppies, senior dogs, flat-faced breeds and any dog with a heart, joint or breathing condition need a gentler, vet-guided plan. When in doubt, ask your vet before ramping up.
