Overview
The Telescope goldfish carries its eyes on turrets - protruding orbs that give the breed its name and its needs. Beyond the Black Moor's famous all-black, telescopes come in reds, calicos, pandas and white-and-blacks, all sharing the same gentle temperament and the same requirement: a smooth, safe, unhurried tank.
Natural History
Fixed in China by the early 1700s ('dragon eyes' there); prized in every goldfish tradition since. The Black Moor is simply its most famous colourway.
Appearance
Egg body 15-20 cm, eyes projecting on cone-shaped mounts, flowing double tail; red, red-white, calico, panda (black-white), chocolate.
Tank Size & Setup
As Black Moor: 75-100+ liters, rounded decor only, gentle flow, calm slow tankmates. The eyes are the design constraint of the whole setup.
Water Parameters
18-23ยฐC, stable, clean; weekly changes and diffused filtration.
Diet
Sinking pellets/gel at a consistent spot; sight-limited feeders need routine, not competition.
Health & Lifespan
Average lifespan is 10-15 years. 10-15 years; eye injury and infection after scrapes are the breed risks - a snag-free tank prevents almost all of it.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Panda and calico forms are striking
- Placid and personable
- Hardy core constitution
- Centuries-proven breed
Cons
- The eyes limit everything: decor, mates, flow
- Loses food races
- Vulnerable to rough handling/netting
- Vision minimal
Telescope Goldfish - frequently asked questions
Are the eye turrets fragile?
The mounts are sturdy; the corneas scratch on sharp decor and rough nets - pad the environment, use soft mesh, and injuries stay rare.
What's a panda telescope?
White body with black fins and eye-mounts - one of the most popular modern forms, though the black areas can fade with age like a Moor's.
Telescope vs Celestial?
Telescopes look sideways from raised mounts; Celestials' eyes point permanently upward - a far more extreme and demanding breed. Telescopes are the keepable middle.
