Overview
The Lionhead is China's crowned eggfish - the original dorsal-less breed whose head disappears under a full raspberry wen covering crown, cheeks and chops like a lion's mane. Rounder-backed and older in lineage than Japan's Ranchu, it shares the family's gentle clumsiness and its need for calm, clean, considerate water.
Natural History
Centuries-old Chinese breed (the 'lion dance' fish), ancestor to the Japanese Ranchu; the two diverged on back-curve and wen emphasis.
Appearance
Egg body 13-18 cm, straighter back than a Ranchu, no dorsal, wen enveloping the whole head with age; oranges, red-whites, calicos, blacks.
Tank Size & Setup
Calm, smooth, roomy (75-100 l), gentle filtration, dorsal-less-friendly company only. Same tub/top-view tradition as Ranchu if you fancy it.
Water Parameters
18-23ยฐC, clean above all - the wen is infection-prone in poor water, as with Orandas.
Diet
Sinking gel/pellets and greens, modest portions; the eggfish digestion asks for fiber and restraint.
Health & Lifespan
Average lifespan is 8-12 years. 8-12 years; wen overgrowth can narrow vision in extreme lines, buoyancy issues follow overfeeding - both manageable with moderate stock and discipline.

- Gentle tub-or-tank companion
- Ranchu charm, straighter back

Lionhead Goldfish - frequently asked questions
Lionhead or Ranchu?
Lionhead = fuller mane, straighter back, Chinese tradition; Ranchu = arched back, tucked tail, Japanese refinement. Care identical; aesthetics choose for you.
Does the wen block sight?
In heavy lines it can shade the eyes - pet keepers should pick moderate wens; trimming exists but is a vet-level intervention, not routine care.
Why no dorsal fin?
The eggfish family trait, centuries selected - it defines the smooth-backed silhouette both Lionhead and Ranchu carry.
