Overview

The Celestial gazes permanently at the sky - telescope eyes rotated fully upward, a dorsal-less back, and a history in imperial Chinese courts where fish that looked up at the emperor were the point. Like the Bubble Eye it is a specialist's breed demanding a padded, patient, species-only world.

Natural History

Chinese, documented by the 1770s and romanticised ever since; Korean and Chinese court traditions prized the heavenward gaze.

Appearance

Egg body 10-15 cm, no dorsal, both eyes turned permanently upward on telescope mounts; classic orange and red-white.

Tank Size & Setup

Species tank rules: 75+ liters, smooth and calm, sponge filtration, no competitors. Shallower tanks suit their surface-oriented world.

Water Parameters

20-23ยฐC, stable and immaculate - the standard extreme-fancy contract.

Diet

They actually SEE upward: floating food works here (unlike most fancies) alongside carefully placed sinking fare; consistency and zero competition as always.

Health & Lifespan

Average lifespan is 5-10 years. 5-10 years; eye injury, buoyancy notes and general delicacy - the padded-world prescription covers most of it.

Pros & Cons

  • The upward gaze is genuinely endearing
  • Suits calm specialist keepers
  • Compact

Cons

  • Cannot compete or dodge
  • Species-tank only
  • Delicate constitution
  • Sees only the sky above

Celestial Eye Goldfish - frequently asked questions

Why were they bred to look up?

Court legend says fish gazing heavenward (and at the emperor above their tub) were auspicious; the trait was fixed centuries ago and defines the breed.

How do they find food?

Above them, easily - Celestials take floating food well; below them, by smell and luck. Feed to their strength.

Celestial or Bubble Eye for a first extreme fancy?

Celestial - same gentleness without puncturable sacs. Neither is a beginner fish; both reward devoted keeping.
