Overview
Butterfly koi trail fins like silk scarves - long-finned koi bred from Indonesian longfin carp, whose flowing tails and pectorals turn every glide into slow-motion calligraphy. Purists exclude them from traditional shows; pond keepers adore them anyway, and a white Platinum Butterfly in dark water is one of the hobby's great sights.
Natural History
Developed in the 1980s-90s (notably at Blue Ridge, USA) by crossing koi with longfin Asian carp; 'Butterfly' stuck in the West, 'hirenaga' (long-fin) in Japan, where the Emperor famously admired them.
Appearance
Any koi colourway on an elongated frame with fins that keep growing for years - old fish trail extraordinary veils; 60-90 cm plus fin length.
Tank Size & Setup
Koi-standard pond with one addition: smooth everything and gentler pump intakes - those fins tatter on rough edges and rough company.
Water Parameters
Standard koi range; pristine water keeps fin edges crisp (fin rot finds ragged tips first).
Diet
Seasonal koi feeding; steady nutrition supports continuous fin growth.
Health & Lifespan
Average lifespan is 25-40 years. Koi-hardy with fin-specific caveats: tears heal but repeat trauma scars; herons and sharp stones are the enemies of the silk.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Breathtaking flowing motion
- Every variety available longfin
- Hardy true-koi constitution
- Uncrowded niche - conversation fish
Cons
- Fins snag, tatter, tempt nippers
- Excluded from traditional judging
- Slower - mind strong pump flows
- Veil quality varies with age/care
Butterfly Koi - frequently asked questions
Are Butterfly koi 'real' koi?
Genetically carp-koi through and through - traditional Japanese shows exclude them by convention, not biology. Your pond has no judging table.
Do the fins keep growing?
For years - old Butterflies carry veils several times their juvenile length, which is why patient keepers get the showstoppers.
Any special care?
Just fin kindness: smooth decor, guarded intakes, clean water and no fin-nipping tankmates. Otherwise standard koi keeping.
