Overview
The Asian Forest Scorpion is the glossy black tank of the scorpion hobby - a big, heavy-clawed rainforest species kept exactly like its famous cousin the Emperor, but with noticeably more attitude. Average lifespan is 7-8 years. (Heterometrus silenus.)
Origin & Habitat
Humid tropical forest floors of Southeast Asia, sheltering under logs and in shallow burrows.
Appearance
10-15 cm of polished jet black, with broad crusher pincers and a stout tail. Under UV light, like all scorpions, it fluoresces an eerie blue-green.
Temperament & Handling
Defensive rather than dangerous: quicker to raise claws and stand ground than an Emperor. It relies on its strong pincers - the sting is mild, bee-like - but this is a display animal, not a handling pet.
Enclosure
A 45 ร 30 cm floor with 10 cm of moisture-holding substrate for burrowing, cork hides and a shallow water dish. Secure lid - strong animals lift loose ones.
Heating, Humidity, Lighting
Tropical: 25-30ยฐC with 70-80% humidity, misted regularly. Damp (not wet) substrate is the humidity engine; a dry forest scorpion is a stressed one.
Diet
Crickets and roaches weekly, taken in a pincer rush; adults handle large prey easily and may fast around molts. Remove leftovers.
Health & Lifespan
Very hardy in correct humidity; most problems trace to dryness or escape attempts. Matures in 2-3 years, lives 7-8 - a long-term display invertebrate.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Impressive size and glossy looks
- Simple, forgiving tropical care
- UV fluorescence party trick
Cons
- More defensive than an Emperor
- Not a handling animal
- Nocturnal - evening viewing only
Asian Forest Scorpion - frequently asked questions
How dangerous is the sting?
Medically minor for most people - comparable to a bee sting - but painful, and its pinch is genuinely strong. Use tongs and cups for maintenance, never hands.
Asian Forest or Emperor Scorpion?
Emperors are calmer and the classic beginner pick, but CITES-limited supply made Asian Forests the widely available equivalent with identical care.
Why does it glow under UV?
Compounds in the exoskeleton fluoresce blue-green - a harmless, universal scorpion trait and the classic way to spot them at night.
