Labrador Retriever vs Golden Retriever

A side-by-side look at two breeds people often weigh against each other. Every line below comes from each breed's own care profile on this site, so both sides are described the same way.

Key differences at a glance

  • The Labrador Retriever tends to live longer - about 11-13 years, against 10-12 years for the Golden Retriever.
  • Both are large dogs, close in size (25-36 kg and 29-34 kg).

Exercise needs A Labrador needs real exercise - minimum 60-90 minutes daily for an adult, ideally including off-lead running, swimming, or retrieving. A healthy adult Golden needs at least 60-90 minutes of vigorous exercise daily - ideally a mix of running, swimming, retrieving, and scent work.

Which one suits you?

These two are genuinely close - both friendly to a fault, both useless as guard dogs, both needing 60 to 90 minutes of real exercise a day. The difference that matters is coat and cancer risk; temperament is close. The Golden costs you more grooming and, on current numbers, more worry; the Labrador costs you more vigilance about weight. Pick on those two axes and you will not go far wrong.

Health, and what it costs you

The Labrador averages 11-13 years, the Golden 10-12, and the Golden's profile points to cancer - the breed's leading health concern, haemangiosarcoma and lymphoma foremost. European lines do better but are not exempt, and the Morris Animal Foundation study is still mapping why. Both breeds share hip and elbow dysplasia, so cleared parents are non-negotiable either way. The Labrador's own headline risk is more mundane and more preventable: many pet Labs carry too much weight. Labs also carry exercise-induced collapse, which has a DNA test.

What each one asks of a normal week

Effectively identical exercise needs, and both want the work to be mental as well as physical - retrieving, scent games, swimming. Both shed enough to redecorate a sofa, but the Golden's longer coat also mats and needs regular brushing rather than just vacuuming. The Golden is the more sensitive of the two and reads household mood closely; the Labrador is the more boisterous adolescent, mouthing and sweeping coffee tables clean well into its second year.

Choose the Labrador Retriever if

you would rather manage a food thief than a coat, and want the slightly hardier average dog.

Choose the Golden Retriever if

you want the softer, more sensitive character and will brush regularly - and you go into it knowing the breed's cancer risk.

Health figures above come from each breed's own profile on this site, and breed averages are exactly that - averages. An individual dog from screened parents can do far better than its breed's statistics, and one from an unscreened litter can do far worse. Ask any breeder which tests the parents have had, and walk away from anyone who finds the question rude.
