Which one suits you?
Both are sweet, people-oriented spaniels that suit families, and the comparison turns on one hard fact: mitral valve disease is close to universal in Cavaliers, and it is the thing that ends most of their lives. The Cocker Spaniel is the healthier bet on the numbers and needs more coat and ear work in exchange. If you want a Cavalier anyway, buy from a breeder who screens hearts and be honest with yourself about the odds.
Health, and what it costs you
On AKC figures the Cocker Spaniel lives 10-14 years and the Cavalier 12-15, though a 2024 UK study found 13.3 years for the Cocker and 11.8 for the Cavalier - and that gap is not random. The Cavalier's profile leads with mitral valve disease and syringomyelia, a painful condition where the skull is too small for the brain; both are breed-defining rather than incidental. Patellar luxation and hip dysplasia follow. The Cocker's list is more ordinary: chronic ear infections from those heavy ears, eye conditions, hip dysplasia, patellar luxation and hypothyroidism. Ear care is weekly, lifelong, and non-negotiable.
What each one asks of a normal week
Nearly identical: 45 to 60 minutes a day for both, with both happy to go longer if conditioned. Both love retrieving - the Cocker adds real enthusiasm for water and swimming. Both are sensitive to harsh handling, and the Cavalier in particular is a poor candidate for a house that is empty all day. The Cocker asks for more grooming - a full coat plus those ears - while the Cavalier's coat is easier. Both are excellent with children and other animals.
Choose the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel if
you want the easier coat and the gentler pace, and you go in with cardiac screening and clear eyes.
Choose the Cocker Spaniel (American) if
you want the better health odds and the more robust dog, and you will keep up with ears and coat.
Health figures above come from each breed's own profile on this site, and breed averages are exactly that - averages. An individual dog from screened parents can do far better than its breed's statistics, and one from an unscreened litter can do far worse. Ask any breeder which tests the parents have had, and walk away from anyone who finds the question rude.
